Wolves top Rockets with defense

CARNEY — Defense was the name of the game here Tuesday night as the Carney-Nadeau girls posted a 47-30 basketball triumph over the Rapid River Rockets.

The Wolves led 21-8 at halftime and 40-24 after the third quarter of this match-up between Skyline Central Conference teams.

“Our defense was exceptional in the first half,” said C-N coach Ken Linder. “We got some steals, which really sparked us. We had a 14-2 run in the last two minutes of the second quarter and first two minutes of the third. They started to score in the third quarter, but we had already gained separation. We just did what we needed to do to win the game.”

Tessa Wagner scored 19 points to go with 29 rebounds — tying the school record — and Sandra Boulton added 16 points for the Wolves, who shot 32% from the field.

“Both of them really got us going in the second half,” said Linder. “They did a real good job on the offensive boards.”

The Wolves (6-4 overall, 5-4 SCC) held a 49-39 rebounding advantage and committed 11 turnovers. They had 13 steals, including four by Haley Ernest.

Kristin Goodacre led the Rockets with 14 points, while Cecilia Pilon added 10.

C-N, which also won the JV game 56-23, visits Mid Peninsula Friday. Rapid River hosts Munising Friday.
