Wolverines down Hawks

REPUBLIC — In need of a bounceback win after falling at North Dickinson Wednesday, the Mid Peninsula girls basketball team got just that in a 72-32 road triumph over non-conference foe Republic-Michigamme Friday night.

Chevy Koski came out hot for Mid Pen in the first quarter, scoring 12 of her 14 points as the Wolverines (5-2) built a 23-2 lead.

With the Hawks (0-6) paying extra close attention to Koski, Daisy Englund scored 13 of her 16 points in the second quarter as Mid Pen led 46-8 at the half and then put it on cruise control the rest of the way.

“Chevy came out hot, Daisy took over in the second quarter and then everyone started to contribute in the third,” Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell said. “It was a good team win.”

Kennedy Englund chipped in with 11 points and 12 assists for the Wolverines, who shot 32 for 76, had 32 rebounds, 16 steals, 22 assists and committed just two turnovers. Allyson Lancour added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Camryn Croasdell also had 10 points.

“We tried a new press and kind of modified a couple other ones we’ve had in the past,” coach Croasdell said. “Chevy Koski ended up with seven steals, and I think six of them were in the first quarter.

“We pressed in the first quarter and then we quit.

“The girls played smart, moving without the ball and cutting to the hole. I don’t know if we ran a play today, we just found the open person and cut to the hole.”

Taylin Raisanen led the Hawks with 15 points.

Mid Pen, which also won the jayvee game, visits Forest Park Tuesday.

R-M travels to Baraga Tuesday.
