Rockets let lead slip, fall to Stephenson

STEPHENSON — The Rapid River girls basketball team fell to the Stephenson Eagles 50-47 here Monday in a Skyline Central Conference matchup.

The Rockets (4-4, 4-3 SCC) trailed 13-4 at the end of the first quarter, but then pulled ahead 25-23 at halftime and led 41-36 at the end of the third quarter.

“Emily Goodacre really stepped up for us tonight with 14 points,” Rockets’ coach Scott Goodacre said. “Natalie Belanger added 12 points with eight rebounds against a taller lineup tonight.”

The Eagles (3-5, 3-2 SCC) then outscored the Rockets 14-6 in the final frame to come away with the victory.

“We had a great look at the end but couldn’t get it to fall at the end of regulation,” coach Goodacre said. “Our ladies were in it and fought until the end.

“It came down to free throws and our field goal percentage. We had a lot of good looks, but we’ll keep working at it and continue to keep improving.”

Ava Klatt led the Eagles with 11 points.

Rapid River travels to Carney-Nadeau Jan. 21.
