MUNISING — Manistique outlasted Munising 54-53 in overtime after playing a close girls basketball game throughout on Tuesday night.

Megan Matson led the Mustangs with 24 points, while Crystal Murdock had 12. Emilee McDaniel was Manistique’s offensive leader with 18 points and Brooke St. John had 17.

“I thought our girls played with great effort tonight,” Munising head coach Matt Mattson said. “Last time, we played Manistique, it was 64-39, they beat us by 25.

“I’m not into moral victories, but closing that gap and losing by one in overtime is a pretty good showing.

“And we had our chances. I messed up down the stretch a little bit. I had a timeout and I probably should’ve called it and didn’t. But we played with great effort and that’s what I was worried about.”

Manistique led by two after the first quarter and built their lead to 29-21 at the half. However, the Mustangs rallied, pulling within one of the Emeralds at 35-34 before tying it up at 45-45 in the fourth and forcing the game into overtime.

Munising (5-7) travels to Rapid River Friday, while Manistique hosts Ishpeming.
