MANISTIQUE — The Gladstone girls snapped a two-game losing skid with a 52-44 road win over Manistique Tuesday night in a Mid-Peninsula Conference basketball game. In the process, the Braves also halted the Emeralds’ two game-winning streak.
Gladstone (5-7, 4-3 M-PC), playing without center Megan Crow for the fourth game in a row, jumped out to a 15-10 lead after the first quarter and led 29-17 at the half.
“I was a little disappointed in that first half with our number of turnovers,” Emeralds coach Dave Winkel said. “Gladstone did a good job on the defensive side. They played the passing lanes well. We were too careless with the ball, and that was too much to overcome in that first half.”
The Emeralds (4-10, 1-6 M-PC) didn’t go away in the second half, scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter and pulling within five with with just a few minutes to go.
Gladstone, however, was able to hang on for the victory.
“I was pretty proud of the girls’ effort tonight,” Winkel said. “At one point we were down by almost 20. In the past, that’s kind of where we’d start to give up a little bit, but tonight we found a way to battle back and it was a five-point game with just a few minutes to go. It’s just another sign that we’re taking steps in the right direction.”
Alaina Trudeau led the Braves with a season-high 13 points. Maddie Ahlgren and Marnnea LaFave each chipped in 11.
Brooke St. John led the Emeralds with 11 points and Emilee McDaniel added 10.
Winkel cited turnovers were the biggest difference in the game.
“We definitely still played well minus the turnovers,” he said. “You cut those in half and I think it’s a completely different story tonight. We played with good effort and good focus for the whole game. We’re definitely trending in the right direction, for sure.”
The Braves, who won the JV contest 39-23, visit fifth-ranked Negaunee Tuesday. Manistique visits Gwinn Monday.
