Wolves take down Trojans

CRYSTAL FALLS — The Carney-Nadeau girls’ basketball team sprinted off the line here Tuesday in a 45-37 win over the Forest Park Trojans.

The Wolves (1-1) jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back in this Skyline Central Conference contest.

“It was real helpful to get out to a fast start, especially since we didn’t come out very fast in our first game (Friday vs Mid Peninsula),” Wolves’ coach Ken Linder said. “We came out and got on the fastbreak pretty good, which sparked us early. We got some good clean looks and we made them.”

Tessa Wagner was Carney’s lone double-figures scorer with 18 points. Mercedes Simmons led the Trojans (0-3) with 16.

“She did a really nice job in the post and on the boards,” Linder said of Wagner’s performance. “She got into the right spots and got some easy baskets. They were playing some high zone and then they went man, so we set some good screens to get some mismatches and it worked out pretty good for us.”

Linder was happy with his team’s defensive performance.

“It was a really good defensive outing,” he said. “That’s pretty much what sparked us and kept us going throughout the game.”

Carney, which won the jayvee match 48-22, travels to Stephenson Friday.
