Wagner’s triple lifts Norse in double OT

PORT HURON — In a men’s basketball game that couldn’t have possibly been played more evenly, Matt Wagner decided to take matters into his own hands.

With Bay College trailing Mid-Michigan College 90-89 and 40 seconds left to play in double overtime, Ryan Robinette came up with a steal and passed to Wagner, who drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner to put the Norse up by two. Wagner then grabbed the rebound off a Lakers’ miss on the ensuing possession and iced the contest with a pair of free throws as the Norse held on for a 94-90 double overtime win Saturday in Port Huron.

The game was tied at the half, after regulation, and there was still no winner after the first overtime.

The Lakers (6-3) took control in the second overtime, building a 90-85 lead with 1:30 left before the Norse (6-4) closed the game on a 9-0 run. Chris Dobessi sunk a pair of free throws and a layup by Robinette made it a one-point game with 40 ticks left before Wagner’s heroics.

Robinette led the Norse with 22 points, seven rebounds, nine assists and three steals. Dobessi added 17 points and nine boards, while Wagner and Christian Alexander each scored 16.

Jaylen Rutherford led the Lakers with 42 points. Dre Tuominen added 15, while Javel Lewis chipped in 11.

The Norse return home for the Quality Inn & Suites Holiday Classic this weekend, starting with Harper College Saturday at 8 p.m.
