Emeralds start fast to upend Munising

MANISTIQUE — After suffering a tough defeat at Negaunee in their season opener Tuesday, the Manistique Emeralds bounced back in a huge way with a 64-49 triumph over Munising in their home opener Thursday night.

The Emeralds (1-1), who shot 50 percent from the floor, jumped out to a 29-12 halftime lead by getting easy buckets in transition.

“It was nice to jump out early on,” Emeralds’ coach Dave Winkel said. “We got our transition game on early, and we scored on the opening tip-off. We were able to push the ball up the court and make ourselves a little lead. That was mainly the way we scored throughout the game. We were able to get the ball back up the court quickly before the defense was able to set up.”

Munising (0-1) pressed in the second half to try to get back in the game, which ended up creating scoring opportunities for both teams.

“It was pretty much feast or famine (in the second half),” Winkel said. “We would either turn it over or we would break out of it easily. We turned it over and they got some easy baskets.”

Emilee McDaniel led the Emeralds with 14 points, while Kayla Muth and Madison Zellar each added 12. Emma Swanson chipped in with 10.

The Emeralds hit 28 of 56 shots, while the Mustangs shot just 13 for 70. Manistique outrebounded Munising 44-27.

“It was fun for me to see the girls happy, and to see them enjoying themselves out on the floor,” Winkel said. “It was nice to get a comfortable win. I was proud of the way they were able to hold it together and with the energy they had during the game.”

The Emeralds host Newberry Monday.
