Emeralds fall to Indians

MANISTIQUE — The Manistique girls had trouble putting the ball through the hoop in overtime here Monday night in a 55-51 basketball loss to the Newberry Indians.

Manistique led 38-32 after the third quarter of the non-conference contest.

“It was kind of a back and forth game,” said Emeralds’ coach Dave Winkel. “Newberry went up by two points in the overtime and they were able to burn some time off the clock. They took real good care of the ball and we didn’t quite make enough shots down the stretch to keep pace.”

The Emeralds (1-2) had a chance to win in regulation, but Emilee McDaniel’s 3-point shot from the wing bounced out of the rim at the buzzer.

Katie Rahilly scored 25 points for the Indians (1-1), who led 16-9 after the first quarter. McDaniel finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

“Emilee played a real nice game for us,” said WInkel. “We came out very flat in the first quarter, then we calmed down on offense and picked up our defense. We had two real nice quarters, but down the stretch they made some outside shots.”

Manistique held a 39-27 rebounding advantage and sank 22-of-53 field goals, but committed 25 turnovers. Newberry hit 21-of-62 shots and had 11 miscues.

The Emeralds, who won the jayvee game 31-26, travel to Rudyard Wednesday. The Indians host St. Ignace Friday.

Newberry 16 10 6 16 7 — 55

Manistique 9 15 14 10 3 — 51
