YMCA flag football

ESCANABA — YMCA indoor flag football begins Saturday. The league is open to boys and girls from grades 1-6, with divisions for grades 1-3 and 4-6. The seasons concludes Dec. 14. Practice will be held twice a week, and a game will take place each Saturday starting Nov. 23 at the Hannahville Ice and Turf — formerly known as the Wells Sports Complex.

“Indoor flag football is a great way to introduce young kids to the game without the danger tackle football brings,” said YMCA Youth Sports Coordinator Boston Hood. “This program will be the first of its kind in the area and will allow kids to enjoy football without the cold weather conditions. We will focus more on getting everyone to play quarterback, running back, wide receiver, etc., which will make it easier for the players to learn all of the different positions.”

Players are required to wear tennis shoes and are encouraged to wear long sleeves and pants due to the turf.

Registration is available at the YMCA front desk, online at nlymca.com or by phone (789-0005). Fees are $25 for YMCA members and $50 for the general public. Registrants also receive a long sleeve, flag football T-shirt.
