Rockets shoot past Black Bears

GARDEN CORNERS — Rapid River’s hitters presented problems for Big Bay de Noc here Tuesday night as the Rockets rolled to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-19) volleyball triumph over the Black Bears.

“Emotions were running high with this being our last home match and we let it get to our heads,” said Big Bay coach Angie Paulson. “Rapid River has some great hitters, too. They were coming hard and finding the holes. We haven’t played many teams that find the holes that well and with that much accuracy. Toward the third set, however, the girls were finally getting into the groove and even had a short lead.

“We just couldn’t hang on. We had some great saves but couldn’t keep the momentum going.”

Big Bay senior Meagan Yonker collected three service aces, one kill, one block, two assists and 18 digs in her final home match. Piper Jones added five kills and eight digs and Katelyn DeKeyser had two assists and nine digs.

“Meagan is a great leader and example on the court and we are going to miss her next year,” said Paulson.

Big Bay travels to Brimley to face Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter Thursday, while the Rockets host Forest Park.
