Nordics sweep Mid Pen

ST. NICHOLAS — The Mid Peninsula Wolverines had trouble matching up with North Dickinson’s front line at times here Thursday as they dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-16) volleyball decision to the Nordics on Parents’ Night.

“We had a hard time stopping their big hitters,” said Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser. “North Dickinson had some hard hitters and we were constantly playing catch up. Lack of communication also hurt us.”

Mid Pen was within 15-13 following a service ace by senior libero Elli Paulsen in the finale.

Hitting and defensive errors by the Wolverines, a kill by senior Briana Smith and net violation by Mid Pen, however, enabled the Nordics to gain a 19-13 cushion.

A passing error trimmed the Nordics’ lead to 19-14. Kills by sophomore Kassandra Cary, Smith and senior Kylie Gustafson then enabled the Nordics to take an insurmountable 22-14 advantage in this Skyline Central Conference matchup.

“We told the girls they had to come to play and they did that,” said Nordics’ coach Sandy Haustein. “Mid Pen won at Forest Park (Tuesday). We knew they had a good team. Those girls have played together a long time.”

Mid Pen was within 12-9 following a two-hit violation by the Nordics in the second set.

The Nordics made it 14-9 on a kill by Cary before a service error trimmed their lead to 14-10.

A hitting miscue by Mid Pen gave the Nordics a sideout and 15-10 cushion. The Wolverines then committed a two-hit violation before a kill by Ledzian gave the Nordics an insurmountable 17-10 advantage.

A kill and block by Ledzian and a kill by Gustafson helped the Nordics secure the opener.

“We were able to play off the block,” said Haustein. “Our serving was a little off, but we had some nice passes to the setter and she was able to set up our hitters. I’m just proud of every one of them tonight.”

Smith, Gustafson and sophomore Chrislyn Inglese had an ace apiece for the Nordics.

Paulsen, who had Mid Pen’s lone ace, added 11 digs. Junior setter Daisy Englund recorded 12 assists and five digs. Senior middle hitter Kennedy Englund had three kills, three blocks and six digs. Chevy Koski added two kills and five blocks and Camryn Croasdell had two kills and three blocks.

“Tonight, our hits were going out of bounds,” said Kayser. “We had a lot of hitting errors. We were a little sluggish in the beginning. This was an off night for us. This was definitely not our norm. We can always learn from our mistakes. We’re looking forward to bouncing back.”

The Nordics, who also won the jayvee match 2-1 (25-16, 24-26, 15-10), visit Forest Park Thursday. Mid Pen (9-3 overall, 7-2 SCC) goes to Superior Central Monday.

Koski (two kills, five blocks, two digs); Croasdell (two kills, three blocks, two assists, seven digs); Lancour (two kills, one block, three digs); Prater (two kills, two digs); D.
