Grimm wins women’s 10-K; Whitmer 2nd in men’s race

GLADSTONE — Ahmed Elnoshokaty of Marquette topped a field of 74 runners in the MISH Waterfront Fall 10-kilometer run here Saturday, covering the 6.2-mile course in 40 minutes, 55.7 seconds.

He was followed by Gary Whitmer of Gladstone (43:10.4) and Greg Isom of Madison, Wis. (43:25.3) on this cloudy and windy day with temperatures hovering near 40.

“The wind was just brutal in the middle of the race,” said Whitmer. “It took me an extra three minutes to get back. There was nothing you could do.”

Brianna Grimm of Escanaba was crowned women’s champion at 46:04, followed by Sereena Johnson of Iron Mountain (48:24.4) and Amanda Jasso of Escanaba (49:24.5).

“The wind was rough coming in,” said Grimm. “In the first half, I tried to let the wind push me because I knew the headwind would be tough in the second half. This is the chilliest race I’ve ever done. I just put my head down and made myself as aerodynamic as I could. Positive thoughts kept me going through the whole race.”

In the 5-K race, Kaden Bradley of Manistique became champion of a field of 98 in 23:50.9. He was followed by MIchael Gascon of Grand Rapids (24:00.1) and Ronald Benner of Wheaton, Ill. (24:58.3).

Hanassa Wicks of Kingsford took the women’s race at 27:13.7, followed by Haille van Steen of Gladstone (27:53.1) and Sarah Carlson of Escanaba (29:25.2).

“The temperature was okay, but wind made it a little tough,” said Wicks. “Otherwise, it would have been a little more comfortable. I took a pretty conservative approach today and it paid off.”
