Broncos’ volleyball swept by Stephenson

STEPHENSON — Coach Sara Johnson challenged her volleyball team before the match to come out ready and start strong, and the Eagles did just that as they swept Bark River-Harris 3-0 in commanding fashion on Thursday night.

Stephenson jumped out to a 15-4 lead early thanks to five service points each from Emily Johnson, Justine Havelka and Toree Kuntze, but the bigger story of Game 1 was Makayla Johnson tallying nine kills as the Eagles rolled to a 25-10 opening game win.

Picking up where they left off, the Eagles held a 15-5 lead early on behind five more kills from Makayla Johnson. With the score at 17-8, Gena Anders stepped to the service line and went for eight-straight points to win 25-8.

The third game was much of the same, with some excellent defensive play leading the way en route to just one digging error in the game that allowed setter Emily Johnson to position the ball well for the players at the net leading to five different players recording kills.

Havelka stepped to the line to serve with the score at 2-1 and by the time she left, it was 16-2 as the Eagles won easily 25-8 to secure the sweep.

Makayla Johnson led the team with 17 kills; Emily Johnson had 20 assists and 17 digs; Havelka had 10 digs and Paige Cappaert had six kills and two digs.

“This was our strongest performance of the year,” Stephenson coach Sara Johnson said. “They challenged each other to be unified and play with a purpose tonight. I’m so proud of them and their performance.”

The Eagles (18-3-4 overall, 7-2 Skyline) head to Escanaba for a tournament this weekend before hosting North Central on Tuesday, Oct. 22 for their annual Pink Night.
