Wolves sweep Broncos

CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves quickly became the aggressor here Tuesday night in a 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-7) volleyball rout of Bark River-Harris.

Carney scored the first five points and led by as much as 23-7 in the opener.

In the second set, BR-H was within 7-6 following a kill by senior Makena Lockwood.

The Wolves then got a sideout on a kill by sophomore Taylor Kedsch and scored the next four points for a 12-6 cushion.

BR-H was within 17-12 following a two-hit violation by the Wolves.

A kill by Kedsch and a hitting error enabled C-N to gain a 19-12 advantage before the Broncos got a sideout.

The Broncos, however, committed a hitting error and Kedsch got three straight kills to put the Wolves up 23-13.

“Taylor’s kills really helped us out,” said C-N coach Steve Kedsch. “Liana (Blahnik) did a real good job at the net and Haley (Ernest) did a great job setting. She plays that role very well.”

Blahnik ended the second set with a service ace and opened the third with a kill.

Carney’s lead reached 6-0 on a kill by senior MaeLynn DeBacker before the Broncos scored their first two points.

“Jules Thoune hurt her arm tonight,” said coach Kedsch. “We needed someone to step up and MaeLynn did a great job. Our serving is starting to come around. Overall, the kids played a complete match. This was probably our best match to this point.”

C-N got a sideout on a serving miscue and senior Sandra Boulton served for six straight points, including three aces, for a 13-2 advantage.

The teams then exchanged sideouts and Blahnik followed with a seven-point run for a 21-3 advantage.

“We just didn’t get an offense going,” said BR-H coach Jennifer Ives. “Nothing was working. They ran a fantastic offense and we were playing defense all night. We didn’t get a block on the ball. If I were them, I’d be swinging, too. Hopefully, this will motivate the girls to work harder.”

The Wolves collected 31 kills, including 16 by Blahnik. Kedsch added 14.

“When we can continue to attack the other teams, we can get them off balance a little,” said coach Kedsch.

Sophomore Tressa Ives hit four aces for the Broncos, who won the jayvee match 2-1 (18-25, 25-15, 15-7).

The Wolves (6-1-3) travel to Rapid River Thursday while BR-H (4-1) visits Superior Central.
