Wolves stymie Mid Pen for sweep

Austin Hemmingson | Daily Press Carney-Nadeau’s Taylor Kedsch (10) hits the ball over the net as Mid Peninsula’s Kennedy Englund jumps to defend Thursday at Carney.

CARNEY — For a brief moment in the second set, it appeared Mid Peninsula had stolen the momentum and it might be a four or five-set match. Then, Carney-Nadeau regrouped and stole the momentum back in time to win the set on its way to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-12) volleyball sweep over the Wolverines.

“I thought we played really good volleyball,” C-N coach Steve Kedsch said. “It was probably one of our better matches of the year to this point. This is a good win for us to beat a team like Mid Pen.”

After the Wolves (3-1-3) dominated the first set, they built a 6-0 lead in the second behind a five-point serving run by Jules Thoune. Their lead eventually swelled to 12-4 and sat at 16-10 before Mid Pen’s Camryn Croasdell served for seven straight points to give the Wolverines a 17-16 lead. The Wolverines built a 22-19 lead and were up 23-22 before they committed a service error and were called for net interference on the next two plays. The Wolves took advantage by finishing the set with the next point.

“In about the middle of the second set we started making some errors and Mid Pen definitely took advantage of it,” Kedsch said. “They’re a good defensive team, they’re going to keep the ball in play and we just wanted to keep hitting the ball at them. Eventually, it’s going to hit the floor.

“I told them after that second set, they had some adversity but they fought through it. We got down a little bit, but they found a way to pick themselves back up. I give them a lot of credit for that. That’s a sign of a team growing.”

Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser credited the Wolves’ hitters for taking Mid Pen out of its game.

“I’m very happy with the effort and how hard we worked, but we got to give Carney credit,” Kayser said. “They have some outstanding hitters, and they were killing us in the back row tonight.”

The Wolverines (2-1) got off to a hot start in the third set, building a 6-1 lead before the Wolves rallied to tie it at 10. C-N then took control of the set behind an 11-point service run by Taylor Kedsch, who finished with five aces.

“(Taylor) is a very smart server,” coach Kedsch said. “She was seeing a hole on the court that she found on her own — I didn’t even help her. She made it tough on Mid Pen’s service return there for a while.”

Kayser said that will be a point of emphasis for the Wolverines going forward.

“We’re definitely going to improve on our serve receive and receiving hard hits,” she said. “We definitely did not have our communication going on tonight like we normally do. We had a lot of quiet spells and too many dropped balls.”

Sandra Boulton led C-N with six aces, nine kills and seven digs. Kedsch chipped in with five aces, 10 kills and seven digs. Liana Blahnik added three aces, eight kills and seven digs while Haley Ernest had 25 assists and nine digs.

Chevy Koski led Mid Pen with six digs and five kills. Kennedy Englund added nine digs and four kills while Daisy Englund led with 10 assists and Elli Paulsen led with 12 digs.

C-N, which also won the jayvee match 2-1 (25-16, 18-25, 25-10), hosts Stephenson Tuesday while Mid Pen hosts Rapid River Thursday.
