Rockets drop OT heartbreaker to Rudyard

RUDYARD — Bryce Lundquist threw for three touchdowns here Friday night, but it wasn’t quite enough to keep the Rapid River Rockets from dropping a 27-26 overtime decision to the Rudyard Bulldogs.

Lundquist’s 20-yard aerial to Gavin Berg tied the score at 6-6 early in the second quarter of this Great Lakes Eight Conference East Division match-up.

The Rockets then tied the score at 12 on Lundquist’s 60-yard bomb to Tyler Sundling midway through the third and a one-yard run by Griffin Flath pulled them even at 20 with six minutes, 15 seconds left in regulation.

Rapid River took a 26-20 lead on Lundquist’s 17-yard pass to Berg in the overtime.

The Bulldogs, however, scored on an 11-yard run and kicked the extra point to improve to 2-1 overall in the East Division opener.

“We had opportunities,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “We played well in spurts, but we need to clean up our mistakes. We need to improve our play-calling, blocking, tackling and running our plays. The effort is there. Now we have to finish it up.”

Sundling ran 15 times for 112 yards and caught three passes for 73. Berg had five receptions for 87 and two TDs and Lundquist hit 11-of-24 aerials for 184.

Defensively, Lundquist had two interceptions and Berg had one. Mason Kudlick and Ishmael Hernandez had fumble recoveries. Both teams had five turnovers.

“This is a tough one to lose,” said Ostrenga. “We have to hope the guys stay together.”

The Rockets host Cedarville Friday.
