Nordics take care of Jets

FELCH — The Carl F. Lemin Jr. Gymnasium was hot and humid Thursday night, as the North Dickinson Lady Nordics welcomed coach Rick Mick and the Lady Jets of North Central for Skyline Conference Volleyball action. Coach Sandy Haustein’s Nordics won

3-0 in straight sets 25-8, 25-18, 25-12.

In set No. 1, North Dickinson got off to a fast start with a 4-0 lead. Then with two separate five-point scoring runs, it extended its lead to 14-3, going on to win 25-8.

Set No. 2 was the best of the evening. It was very back-and-forth, with the Nordics scoring two different scoring runs. A five-point run extended the score to 14-12, then a six-point run made it 20-13. The Jets fought back from both Nordic runs, mainly on the serving of Madi Dani, but to no avail as North Dickinson took the set 25-18.

The third and final set of the night was much like set No. 1 was for the host Nordics. Libero Ashton Hord got the Nordics off to another hot start with an 8-0 service run. With the score 22-7 in favor of the home team, North Central went on a five-point run of its own while Olivia Arnold was up in the serving rotation. The Jets’ late surge was not enough, and North Dickinson took the final set 25-12 to end the match in three sets.

Even though the night saw her team win in straight sets, Haustein saw some things her team needs to work on moving forward.

“We came out kind of flat tonight, and our serving was somewhat inconsistent” said Haustein.

Haustein did note that Kylie Gustafson was perfect in her serving, while praising the play of her back row for the duration of the match. Lastly, she noted that Cassandra Carey played well at the net.

The Jets, who fell to 0-5 had Mick in a positive attitude after the match despite the sweep.

“In the second set, we capitalized on their mistakes. They’re (North Dickinson) the smartest and most athletic team we have faced thus far. Wherever we left a hole on the court, they found it” Mick said.

“Tonight was the best we served so far on the season. We’ve gotten better every match, and tonight was the best yet” said Mick. “We’re very close to a win. We’re competing well with good teams. I emphasized communication for the match tonight, and I think we did well in that area, so that’s a positive as well.”

North Dickison won the jayvee match 3-0.

The Jets return home for match-ups with Mid Peninsula on Tuesday and Rapid River on Thursday. North Dickinson competes in the 10-team Forest Park Invitational on Saturday in Crystal Falls, before returning home to face the Munising Lady Mustangs on Thursday night.
