Gladstone girls win against IM

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Gladstone girls’ tennis team came away with a 6-2 victory over Iron Mountain here Tuesday.

The Braves swept doubles matches, and No. 1 and No. 3 both saw a third set. Gladstone’s Olivia Saari and Marnnea LaFave dropped the first set to Iron Mountain’s Megan Murray and Callie Bianco at No. 1, but then regrouped to take the second and third, 6-3, 7-6.

“Early on in the match I thought we were going to be in trouble,” Braves’ coach Ryan Barron said. “As my No. 1 doubles always do, they ground back and just took it one shot at a time. Next thing you knew, they were right back in it.”

No. 3 doubles had Gladstone’s Sara Eilola and Alesha Marenger falter in their second set against Iron Mountain’s Danika Juul and Bediet Husing, but they finished the third strong, 6-4.

The Braves’ Emma Delaire and Emily Marenger finished No. 2 in two sets.

“No. 2 doubles played their best tennis of the season,” Barron said. “Emma and Emily have been trying all year to put things together. I am very proud of how they complimented each other’s games today. When one girl was down, the other was there to pick her up.”

Gladstone’s Taelor Zeise and Emma Wagner also finished their No. 4 doubles match in two sets.

Iron Mountain split in singles, winning at No. 2 and No. 4 in straight sets. Iron Mountain’s Claire Mongrain finished Gladstone’s Alaina Trudeau at No. 2, and Bella Brown earned the win over Jenna Tardiff at No. 3.

At No. 1, Gladstone’s Andie Balenger won in two sets, as did Kate Matthews at No. 3.

Gladstone travels to West Iron County today at 4:45 p.m. EDT for a make-up match.
