Esky homecoming game suspended

Austin Hemmingson | Daily Press Escanaba’s Josh Bruntjens (3) stiff arms Marquette’s Desmond Mullen during Friday’s game at Escanaba.

ESCANABA — Escanaba’s Great Northern Conference football game against Marquette got suspended at halftime due to a power failure with the visiting Redmen leading 10-7.

Marquette sophomore quarterback Austin Ridl fired a 63-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Drew Wyble for a 7-0 lead on the third play of the game.

Wyble, who also kicked the extra point, added a 27-yard field goal for a 10-point cushion midway through the first quarter.

Senior Josh Bruntjens then thrilled the homecoming crowd with a nine-yard TD run through the middle with two minutes, 51 seconds left in the second stanza and Ethan Silverstone added the extra point, pulling the Eskymos within three points.

The contest will resume today at 11 a.m.
