Big Bay soccer wins one, volleyball swept

MACKINAC ISLAND — The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears earned a soccer victory here Friday, blanking the Mackinac Island Lakers 2-0, then settled for a 1-1 tie Saturday.

Breyden Willour scored a goal in each match and Nick DesJarden sneaked a shot between the goaltender’s legs for Friday’s second goal.

“I thought the team played their hearts out and came together as one,” said Big Bay coach Alex Ranguette. “Saturday morning’s game was a tight match. Both teams made pushes late, but neither was successful in stealing a win.”

Travis Johnson stopped 29 shots through the weekend.

“He’s a phenomenal athlete and keeps us in the game no matter what,” said Ranguette. “Overall, the team looked very solid. I was happy with the effort and communication that came from the players.”

Big Bay’s volleyball team dropped both of its matches to the Lakers, including a 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-20) decision Friday.

The Black Bears host Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter in soccer and volleyball matches Tuesday.
