Braves’ tennis swept Thursday

MARQUETTE — Despite a turnover in its doubles lineup, Marquette dropped just one set and didn’t lose a match in an 8-0 high school girls tennis victory over visiting Gladstone on Thursday.

The Redettes’ No. 4 doubles tandem of Julianna Golisek and Alyson LaBelle won 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 over Gladstone’s Emma Wagner and Taelor Zeise for the closest call.

“All the girls in doubles are playing with new partners or are new to the varsity,” MSHS coach Derek Sandstrom said. “And our doubles is pretty young, so I’m quite happy with that result.”

At the top end, the No. 1 Marquette team of Kennedy Tate and Ryleigh Jackson won 6-1, 6-3, while No. 2 Breanne Sandstrom and Sydney McCarthy won 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 Ruth Hummell and Zoey Brian were 6-1, 6-2 victors.

In singles, No. 1 Elysa Olivier won 6-1, 6-0, No. 2 Mollie Kilpela won 6-1, 6-4, No. 3 Campbell Kallio won 6-1, 6-1 and No. 4 Haddie Ketzenberger finished 6-1, 6-0.

The Redettes play at Kingsford at 11 a.m. EDT Monday, while Gladstone visits Escanaba at the same time.
