Indians honor state title teams, shut out Cubs

GLADSTONE — On a night when the Gladstone Indians American Legion baseball team honored its past champions, the current Indians rolled to a 13-0 shutout victory over bayshore rival Escanaba.

The Indians (6-3) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back at Don Olsen Field Wednesday, as Parker Frappier threw a five-inning complete game shutout.

“He threw strikes,” Indians’ manager Justin Jurek said. “He got ahead of the hitters and he was throwing strikes consistently. That helps because not only are you not falling behind in the count, but it helps with the umpires too. When you’re consistent around the plate you’re going to get those iffy calls, where as if you’re all over the place you’re not going to get those calls as consistently.”

The Indians tacked on three more runs in the second inning and five in the third to open the floodgates.

“We had good at-bats up and down,” Jurek said.

“There’s not too much to be said about that.”

Meanwhile, the Cubs (1-12) used four different pitchers to try to stop the bleeding. Riley Lamb started the game, but was chased after getting just two outs in the first inning.

“Riley’s struggling right now and we’re trying to get him out of that and get him back to the confidence he had in his first start this year,” Cubs’ manager John Bintner said. “It is what it is. We have a night like tonight where they’re honoring them and we more-the-less laid an egg. You can call a spade a spade sometimes. You’d like to show up and compete to keep the fans here because they had a good turnout, but when the game gets out of hand you don’t have anybody here at the end. It’s tough to watch and tough to be those guys, but you’d like them to show some passion and come back the next couple games and fight.

Esky then brought in Drew Rodman, who made it through one full inning before being pulled for Zach Tyler. Tyler pitched 2/3 of an inning before Brett Schlenvogt pitched the remaining 1 2/3 innings.

The Cubs weren’t any better offensively, never really mounting a serious threat.

“I mean, they do battle, but there’s no sense of urgency,” Bintner said. “It’s kind of going through the motions a little bit. We put a couple good at-bats together and got a couple hits at the end. We definitely have the capability of being a team that can win a game when we need to. It all depends on our starting pitching.”

With many folks back in town around the holiday, the Indians took advantage of the opportunity to invite back players and coaches from the 2014, 2017 and 2018 Class A state championship teams. Members of each team were called onto the field one-by-one to be honored as a team behind the pitching mound. Each championship team now has its own sign with each member’s name on it posted on the press box.

Jurek was part of all three teams — 2014 as a player, and 2017 and 2018 as a manager.

“It’s definitely a cool experience,” he said.

“Obviously, it’s great teammates and great players and everything else. It’s cool to get recognition for being a part of all of them, but it’s a different group of guys that really made it easy for me.”

Jurek also thought the ceremony helped the attendance.

“I think the whole ceremony brought in a little extra bit of a crowd,” he said. “Any Esky game is going to bring a crowd, but I think having that ceremony brought a few extra people that might not have come. I think it was good for my guys to play in front of a bigger crowd and get that kind of experience, especially right before the fourth.”

Gladstone, which won the jayvee game 8-6, heads to Antigo, Wis. for a tournament beginning tonight while Escanaba visits Bark River for a doubleheader tonight.
