Esky major girls roll Kingsford in opener

Justin St. Ours | Daily Press Escanaba’s Brooklyn Beauchamp (52) slides safely into third base as Kingsford’s Samantha DeMori waits for the ball Sunday in a Minor Girls’ All-Star district tournament game at Escanaba.

ESCANABA — It was an explosive four innings here Sunday as the Escanaba Minor All-Star softball team (age 8-10) overpowered Kingsford 18-8.

In the bottom of the first inning, Esky’s Chloe Dubord drew a leadoff walk. A passed ball and a stolen base put her on third, and a wild pitch allowed her to score for Esky’s first run. Brooklyn Beauchamp and Breeleigh Reinhart both singled and advanced a base to occupy second and third. Landry Bray then singled on a ground ball and scored Beauchamp and Reinhart to increase the lead to 3-0. Bray scored the last run of the inning on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the second, a single and two walks loaded the bases for Escanaba. Reinhart tripled to score Paige Stammer and Dubord, and Beauchamp scored on an error. Two walks followed and both runners advanced to second and third on a groundout. Clare Jacobsen singled to score Bray and Janessa Platt to increase Esky’s lead to 10-0.

Another single and walk loaded the bases. Two walks and a single drove in three more runs, and Bray sacrificed to score Dubord to make it 14-0.

Esky picked up where it left off in the bottom of the third on a single from Mary Kate Tourangeau and a walk to start the inning. Tourangeau then made it home on a passed ball, Beauchamp singled to score a run and Dubord scored on a throwing error to increase the lead to 17-0.

“The girls reacted really well,” Escanaba manager Justin Jacobsen said. “We got a couple girls that played last year. We have five of them, and they’re the leaders of the team.”

In the top of the fourth, three walks loaded the bases for KIngsford. Samantha DeMori scored on a passed ball for Kingsford’s first run and another walk filled the bases again. Three walks and two hit batters drove in five more runs to reduce its deficit to 17-6. Karly Trevillian singled to score Janessa Misokovich, and another run scored on a throwing error to keep Kingsford alive.

“We got off to a slow start,” Kingsford manager Marc Sutton said. “Then, our girls started to hit the ball better, and we got some walks in there. It just shows how quick a game can change, and it shows that you’re never out of the game. i was proud of how the girls played today.”

In the bottom of the fourth, Tourangeau singled to score Bray and finish the game.

“We came out today and played good softball,” manager Jacobsen said. “We slowed down a little at the end, but we answered right back.”

Bray earned the win for Esky over three innings and Reinhart pitched one inning in relief.

Miley Vandenheuval took the loss for Kingsford over 1 1/3 innings and Samantha DeMori pitched two in relief.
