Iverson 14th at U.S.

Women’s Senior Open

ESCANABA — Becky Iverson, a native of Gladstone, finished in a tie for 14th recently at the second U.S. Women’s Senior Open golf tournament.

Iverson had rounds of 75-72-76-75 – 298. She finished 13 strokes behind the winner, Helen Alfredson.

Iverson, the golf professional at the Bridges Golf Course in Madison, Wis., was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2014 and into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

She played on the LPGA Tour for 14 years and won the Friendly’s Classic in 1995. She also played golf for four years at Michigan State University and won the Michigan Junior Amateur by 20 strokes in 1985.

In 1989 Iverson won the Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship and the Upper Peninsula Ladies Golf Association title.

ESCANABA — The next Eskymo Fan Club meeting is Monday, June 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library.

YMCA golf

ESCANABA — The YMCA Learn to Golf program begins Monday, July 8 at the Irish Oaks Golf Course Driving Range. The program, which is designed to teach children the basic fundamentals of golf, runs from 3-4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, concluding July 12.

“Players will receive a golf-themed gift at the end of the program,” said YMCA youth sports coordinator Boston Hood. “This is perfect for boys and girls ages 6-12 who just want to learn the game from the beginning.”

The YMCA has a limited amount of clubs available for use during this program. It is recommended that participants bring their own clubs.

Registration for the program is available at the YMCA, online at nlymca.com or by phone (789-0005). Entry fee is $26 for Y members and $52 for the general public.

Norse softball among

leaders in NJCAA D-2

ESCANABA — The Bay College Norse finished their inaugural softball season at 28-9 and second in the NJCAA Region 13 tournament, also placing near the top in Division 2 statistics.

As a team, the Norse finished 17th in batting with a .365 average and were 18th in triples with 13.

Emily Bruntjens, a sophomore from Escanaba, placed fourth in triples with eight and 25th in batting at .473 in D-2.

Rhiley Hubert was ninth in pitching with a 1.69 earned run average.

Terrace Bluff men

GLADSTONE — Erik Spindler shot 37 and Rich Hubert hit 39 in the Terrace Bluff Men’s League Monday.

Dahl gets first ace

GLADSTONE — Terry Dahl sank his first hole-in-one Sunday, using an 8-iron on the 144-yard, No. 14 hole.
