RAPID RIVER — As sure as the warm May sun beat down on the track and field athletes here Thursday, the Rapid River boys collected their fourth straight Division 3 regional championship.

The Rockets scored 105 points, followed by Republic-Michigamme 28 and Engadine 23.

“Everybody showed up for his event and did his best,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “Now we have to get kids to focus on school and sports. Our girls did real well, too.”

The Mid Peninsula girls retained their title with 63 points, followed by Rapid River 53 and Engadine 39.

“We placed pretty good,” said Mid Pen coach Lauren Marshall. “We won the sprint relays and placed three in the 400. We had some girls really step up.”

Mid Pen junior Cheveney Koski won the 200-meter dash in 29 seconds and 300 hurdles (54.75) and her sister, freshman Landry Koski, took the 400 (1:07.3) and 3200 (13:21.88).

Chevy also helped the Wolverines take the 400 (54.52) and 800 relay (1:54.61).

“Our handoffs were real good,” said sophomore Daisy Englund, also a key to the winning sprint relays. “We knew Engadine and Rapid River were strong in the field events, but we were able to make up for it in the running events.”

Mid Pen eighth-grader Mary McNally added a first in long jump at 14 feet.

Rapid River grabbed all four places in discus and went 1-2 in shot put. Sophomore Morgan Anderson captured discus (96-7) and classmate Myah Pearson took shot put (27-7).

Senior teammate Emily Thibault was a double-winner, taking high jump (4-10) and the 100 hurdles (18.42).

Superior Central junior Danika Walters copped the 800 (2:29.59), edging Englund by less than a second, and captured the 1600 (5:39.93).

“I ran good times in the 800 and 1600,” said Walters. “The 800 was very close. At first when we got here, it was sprinkling. I usually run better when it’s cooler. It was hot for the 1600, but it wasn’t too bad.”

Engadine got its lone first in the 3200 relay (11:29.92).

The Rapid River boys, led by junior Tyler Sundling, swept the four places in the 800. He also won the 400 (53.6) and was clocked at 2:17.5 in the 800.

Senior Gunner Larson swept the weight events, with tosses of 41-9 in shot and 145-0 in disc and junior Azariah Hernandez added firsts in the 300 hurdles (47.11) and pole vault (11-6).

Rapid River’s Vincent Micheau captured high jump (5-11) and senior Lenny Menary took the 110 hurdles (19.35).

“Gunner did a nice job in shot put and discus,” said Ostrenga. “Overall, our field events did a nice job. This was a good meet. Tony (athletic director Perino) did a nice job putting it together.”

Big Bay de Noc senior Alex LaLonde won long jump with a school-record leap of 20 feet and was runner-up in high jump (5-9).

Republic’s winners were Isaac Lawrence in the 200 (25.22) and Jared Boshears in the 3200 (11:19.47).

Engadine got firsts from Hunter Wiegand in the 100 (12.47) and Hunter Sapp in the 1600 (5:06.91).

“Our boys held their own,” said Engadine coach Ken Dailey. “We had some solid performances.”
