Miners dominate tennis invite

KINGSFORD — Negaunee dominated the Kingsford Invitational boys’ tennis tournament here Saturday.

The Miners captured all but the first flight singles where West Iron County sophomore Holden Ross went undefeated.

Hicks’ loss came to Ross.

Negaunee claimed the other singles titles with Will Luke, Peyton Anderson and Jordan Mason. The Miners swept doubles with Jakson Sager-Drew Lindberg, Jake Larson-Ander Sorenson, Nathan Brundage-Preston Toutant and Tom Kinjorski-Erik Salminen.

Kingsford No. 1 doubles Tyler Beauchamp-Reece Fortner was runner-up, losing only to Negaunee.

The five-team tournament was played under a round robin format, with each match consisting of two short sets starting at 2-2 and no third-set tie-breakers. Team points were based on total number of sets won.

Escanaba recorded a pair of runner-up finishes, with Shaun Beauchamp placing second in No. 4 singles and Garrett Johnson-Issac Maki second at No. 4 doubles.

“Negaunee was real strong and West Iron’s No. 1 singles played really good,” said Esky coach Tom Penegor. “The kids were very competitive. This is the first time lot of our guys participated in something like this. We did a lot of good things. Christer Carne played a real good match against the winner in No. 1 singles. When you play four matches at that level, you get tired in the end.

“Menominee was short-handed. We brought a few extra guys to fill some spots and Spencer Fennell and Troy Delvaux played a couple matches for them.”

Esky starts a busy week with a dual match at Marquette today at 3:30.

“That was a good kickoff for this week,” said Penegor. “We had a lot of support from the parents. Several of them drove the kids up there and the coach is very appreciative of that.”
