ESCANABA — Escanaba’s Craig Kamin and Lexi Chaillier were awarded the Pfotenhauer/Gessner Award Wednesday night as the top senior athletes at the school’s honors program. The award, which is voted on by the coaches, is based on athletics, academics and character.

Both were standout athletes in their respective sports. Kamin played football, basketball and baseball, and Chaillier played volleyball, basketball and softball.

Playing quarterback, Kamin guided the Eskymos’ football team to a 9-3 record and a third straight birth in the Division 4 regional final. He was selected as the large school Player of the Year in the Upper Peninsula, and broke the school record with 38 career touchdown passes.

In basketball, Kamin was selected to the Division 1-3 All-U.P. second team and Great Northern Conference second team, helping the Eskymos win a district title and advance to the regional final. He averaged 11.4 points, 3.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game while shooting 43 percent from the field.

The Esky baseball team is currently 17-11, with Kamin playing a big role in pitching and batting toward the top of the lineup.

Chaillier is the lead-off hitter and right fielder for the Division 2 defending state champion Esky softball team, boasting a batting average near .500 and seven home runs. In volleyball, she was selected to the GNC first team.

Chaillier was also a GNC first team selection and Division 1-3 All-U.P. second team selection in basketball after averaging 10.6 points, eight rebounds and seven assists per game.

The Gessner Award began in 1924 and and the Pfotenhauer name was added in 1992. Herman Gessner was an Escanaba businessman while brothers Bob, Don and Merle were athletic standouts for the Eskymos.
