Tough second quarter dooms Rapid River girls

CRYSTAL FALLS — The Forest Park girls basketball team outperformed the Rapid River Rockets 59-32 here Friday.

The Skyline Central Conference contest was decided by the end of the second half.

Rapid River started the second quarter ahead, but a dominant quarter from the Trojans increased their lead to 29-17 at half-time.

The first quarter was competitive, with Rapid River leading 13-11 at the end.

Forest Park changed up their approach in the second quarter to force turnovers and keep the Rockets away from the basket.

“My girls started out as well as you could ask for,” Rockets’ coach Tony Perino said. “The second and third (quarters) have been our nemesis. We got complacent on defense, and we turned it over too much.”

The Rockets recovered slightly by the fourth quarter but trailed by too much to make a comeback.

“We finished strong, but by then the damage was done,” Perino said.

Rapid River’s Natalie Belanger was its leading scorer with 10 points.

Dalas Loehr was the Trojans highest scorer with 22 points. Mercedes Simmons added 18 and Elle Soderberg finished with 10.

Rapid River hosts North Dickinson Monday.
