Rockets run away from Wolverines
RAPID RIVER — After a bit of a slow start, the Rapid River boys’ basketball team kicked it into high gear to blow by Mid Peninsula 63-39 here Friday night.
The Rockets led 30-21 at the half before pulling away for a convincing Skyline Central Conference win.
“They’re scrappy,” Rockets’ coach Rich Poma said of the Wolverines. “Mark (Branstrom) does a good job getting the guys ready and they play hard for him. I was disappointed in the way we boxed out and rebounded, and the 50-50 balls went to them. Zach Englund is a heck of an athlete. He does a good job of leading their offense and Dylan Trudell is a nice sidekick on the wing for him.
“But overall we played pretty selfless and moved the ball decently. We had some trouble converting in the first half but we picked it up in the second half. It was a good win for us — a good conference win.”
The Rockets (10-5, 7-1 SC) were led by Tyler Sundling with 17 points and Tony DeMars had 12.
“Tyler did a good job,” Poma said. “Tony and Sam (Orth) did a great job on the boards. Braydon Moss did a great job attacking and leading the offense and being efficient. He doesn’t turn the ball over. Overall I’m pretty happy, we just got to take care of a couple things.”
Englund led the Wolverines (1-15, 1-13 SC) with 17 points.
The Rockets, who also won the jayvee game, host Big Bay de Noc Tuesday. Mid Pen visits Munising tonight at 7:30.
