Rockets clinch conference title with win over Nordics

FELCH — A dominant performance by the Rapid River boys’ basketball team clinched it a share of the Skyline Central Conference title here Friday night.

The Rockets (13-5, 13-4 SC) jumped out to a 24-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in an 80-43 rout of North Dickinson in a SC conference game.

“We played well defensively again for the second night in a row,” Rockets’ coach Rich Poma said. “I was happy with the whole team. We rotated and played well on-the-ball defense, we were very unselfish and moved the ball inside-out. It was a very good game for us all-around.”

The Nordics (9-10, 8-7 SC) were a little shorthanded due to a few players being out ill.

“They had a couple guys out with some sickness,” Poma said. “They were definitely down tonight. They were kind of depleted and kind of gassed.”

Tyler Sundling led the Rockets with 18 points and Braydon Moss chipped in with 14. Both players hit four three-pointers.

“Braydon took it upon himself to shoot tonight,” Poma said. “I was really happy to see that. He’s more than capable. Tyler shot it well too. When they see the ball go in they all get more confidence and shoot it well.

“(Tony) DeMars had a heck of a game passing the ball. Sam had a really good game off the bench and all the guys off the bench did a good job contributing when they were in there.”

Matthew Bruette led the Nordics with 13 points and Brennan Donaldson chipped in with 12.

Rapid River, which also won the jayvee game, plays Big Bay de Noc at Big Bay in its district opener Wednesday.
