Mountaineers pluck Emeralds

MANISTIQUE — The Manistique girls basketball team turned the game over to the Iron Mountain Mountaineers 55-33 here Monday.

The Mid-Peninsula Conference game was decided by turnovers. Manistique turned the ball over 17 times in the first half and had 24 total. Iron Mountain had just 13. Rebounds were also a factor, with the Emeralds being outrebounded 34-25.

“We turned the ball over too many times, and they got some easy points,” Manistique coach David Winkel said. “Those two things (turnovers and rebounds) were the difference.”

Halfway through the first quarter, the Mountaineers (6-9, 3-5 M-PC) switched to a press defense. Manistique found themselves unable to compensate and it ended the first quarter trailing 16-9.

Iron Mountain continued its aggressive play and finished the half leading 34-14.

“They anticipate well and really attack,” Winkel said. “They’re very aggressive on the defensive end.”

The third quarter saw Manistique (2-12, 0-8 M-PC) start to find an answer to Iron Mountain’s defense, but they still trailed 46-20 at the end of the period.

The Emeralds found a rhythm in the fourth quarter, holding the Mountaineers to nine points and scoring 13. However, a single period wasn’t enough time to overcome their 26-point deficit.

Iron Mountain’s Faith Bal scored 12 points and Faylor Swartout added 11.

Kayla Muth led the Emeralds with nine points.

The Emeralds, who lost the jayvee game 47-35, host Gwinn Saturday.
