Mid Pen girls win in OT

ST. NICHOLAS — It was a nailbiter to say the least Tuesday night as the Mid Peninsula girls edged Forest Park 60-54 in an overtime basketball thriller.

Mid Pen led 38-31 after the third quarter of the Skyline Central Conference match-up.

The Trojans, however, outscored the Wolverines 17-10 in the fourth to force the overtime.

“We were in the bonus and they were in foul trouble,” said Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell. “Couple of their starters fouled out. We got a quick lead and they had to start fouling us.”

Kennedy Englund led the Wolverines (5-2 overall, 3-2 SCC) with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Chevy Koski added 13 points and Camryn Croasdell had 12.

Mercedes Simmons paced the Trojans (4-2 overall, 3-1 league) with 26 points and 24 boards.

“They’re a very good team,” said coach Croasdell. “The Simmons girl has really improved from last year. We did a lot of double teaming on her. She still had a good game, but I think we got her frustrated. Our girls played unbelievable defense. I thought Daisy Englund did a good job on the Nocerini girl.”

Forest Park held a 43-35 rebounding advantage, hit 22-of-57 field goals and committed nine turnovers. Mid Pen was 15-of-41 from the floor and had nine miscues.

“It was rough out there,” said coach Croasdell. “It was a physical game, but these are the kinds of games we need to win. Lot of our girls were driving well tonight.”

Mid Pen, which dropped the jayvee contest 33-30, travels to North Dickinson Friday. Forest Park hosts Stephenson Friday.
