Esky gymnasts claim dual meet with Miners

NEGAUNEE — The Escanaba gymnastics team narrowly edged Negaunee for the second time in the last week, winning the dual meet 113.8-111.4 here Wednesday. The Eskymos’ depth was on full display, and this time they were able to claim an event.

Escanaba’s Abbie Derouin won the vault with an 8.85 score and teammate Natalie Monkevich came in second at 8.6.

“The girls had a good meet tonight,” Esky coach Theresa Pascoe said. “Our routines are getting stronger with better execution.

“This team’s chemistry is great, all the girls help each other on skills and they come together as a team pulling for each other.”

Derouin finished third on the bars (7.5), while Liz Sliva (6.35) and Caitlyn Davenport (4.85) were fourth and fifth.

Derouin was also fifth on the floor (7.4) to help propel her to a third-place finish overall (30.1). Sliva finished fourth (28.2) and Monkevich was fifth (27.2).

“I’m having fun coaching a group of girls that want to learn new skills and are willing to work hard,” Pascoe said.

Jasmine Clark came in second for Esky on the balance beam (7.6), while Sliva placed fourth (7.3) and Monkevich tied with Negaunee’s Olivia Krook for fifth (6.9).

Monkevich took third on the floor (7.8) and Davenport was fourth (7.6). Davenport also finished fifth on the vault (8.1).

Negaunee’s May Waters (33.6) took first overall, while teammate Kylar Kallioinen was second (32.02).
