MARQUETTE – Escanaba dominated both Marquette (47-29) and Iron Mountain (57-12) to win two dual matches here Monday in the Marquette High School wrestling quad. Negaunee was the fourth team in the meet.

The Eskymos (2-1) were led by seven wrestlers with two wins each: Tyler Lawson (135), Hunter Larson (140), Ryan Van Effen (145), Noah Weaver (152), Kahler Geyer (160), Baily Papineau (171), and Giovanni Strong (285).

Van Effen, Geyer and Strong each recorded two pins and were impressive leading the Esky winners, according to EHS coach Jeff Wright.

“Up and down the lineup we did well and wrestled well,” said Wright. “We had some great individual efforts.

“Giovanni Strong our heavyweight coming out and getting two pins for us as a freshman was big. Van Effen, especially in his second match, was aggressive and came after him and got the pin.”

Escanaba opened its season last week losing to Wisconsin high school wrestling power Coleman.

Wright said his team is right on schedule with the tough Marquette Challenge tournament Friday and Saturday.

“We purposely start the season with Coleman and the tough competition, before the Marquette Challenge,” he said. “We are looking for the high level of wrestling that we will see at Marquette and it gets us ready for February when it really counts.

“We are coming around and progressing like we should.”
