Tech women swept

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Michigan Tech’s women’s basketball team fell twice in the USI Thanksgiving Classic over the weekend.

Sunday the University of Southern Indiana clipped the Huskies 80-65, with Hannah Hobson scoring 17 points. In Saturday’s opener, Tech yielded the first 13 points of the game and dropped a 73-60 decision to Bellamine. Ellie Welsh had 15 points for Tech.

UCF spikers host

NCAA tourney

ORLANDO, Fla. – On the heels of perhaps the school’s finest volleyball season, the University of Central Florida Knights will host Florida Gulf Coast Thursday in its first NCAA home tournament.

UCF (27-3) has won its past 24 matches. The Knights, picked fifth in the preseason poll, became only the third team to finish unbeaten in the American Athletic Conference.

Florida faces Florida State in the other first-round semifinal, with the winners meeting at 7 p.m. Friday.

UCF, coached by Escanaba native Todd Dagenais, led the country in assists, kills and blocks this season. The Knights are seeded 13th in the 64-team NCAA field.

Gould powers Tech

HOUGHTON — Davin Gould recorded a hat trick Saturday to help Michigan Tech blast Alaska 7-2 to complete a weekend hockey sweep. Tech is 6-0 in the WCA and have beaten the Nanooks the past 16 games. Gould scored the first three goals for Tech (7-5 overall).

Tech claims title

ERIE, Pa. – Michigan Tech dominated the second half and won the Gary Miller Classic here Saturday, stopping host Gannon University 50-46 in men’s basketball.

Bryan Heath, selected the tournament’s outstanding play, led Tech (3-2) with 18 points and freshman reserve Owen White added 10 to make the all-tourney team.

Sophomore Dawson Bilski of North Central had two points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals for Tech and freshman Jake Witt of Ewen-Trout Creek added eight points.

NMU women split

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team salvaged a split int he Radisson Classic Sunday by beating Jamestown 54-45,

Jessica Schultz scored 14 points and Lexi Smith added 10 in the win. Saturday NMU (5-2) fell to Concordia St. Paul 63-61. Taylor Hodell scored 16 points.
