Bay men claim sweep, women settle for split

IRONWOOD — The Bay College men’s basketball team extended their winning streak to six games Sunday while the women’s team salvaged a weekend split at the Linquist Classic.

The men whipped Vermillion (Minn.) Community College 84-67 to sweep its appearance in Ironwood. The Norse shelled Hibbing (Minn.) C.C. 96-81 Saturday.

Kobi Lumsden-Barnes led Bay with 21 points Sunday and Reggie Dean contributed 19 points. The Norse (6-2) led 52-33 at the intermission before Vermillion rallied within 56-46 in the second half at the Linquist Center.

Saturday the Norse held a 55-29 cushion in rebounding, with 22 offensive boards. Bay hit 53.1 percent from the floor and Hibbing hit 52 percent.

Freshman Logan Hardwick of Rapid River scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Bay and freshman Ryan Robinette of Escanaba also collected 19 points and had five rebounds. Sophomore Marcus McKenney of Menominee added 18 points and freshman Christian Alexander of Great Britain had 13 points.

The women’s team belted Vermillion 70-37 Sunday, building a 37-15 halftime lead.

Sophomores Jordan Kraemer of Norway and Paige Welch of Bark River-Harris led the Norse with 14 and 13 points respectively.

Saturday Hibbing upended Bay 74-61, with 19 second-half turnovers hurting the Norse, who managed just 15 shots after the intermission. Bay hit only 1-of-12 shots from 3-point range.

Kraemer again led Bay with 13 points and freshman Taylor Hunter of Gladstone added 12 points.

Bethany Baldwin of Watersmeet had 22 points for Vermillion.

The Norse go to Port Huron this weekend, facing Mid Michigan C.C. Friday and St. Clair C.C. Saturday.
