Emeralds spike Esky

ESCANABA — The Manistique Emeralds defeated Escanaba here Thursday. The Emeralds won the match 3-0 (26-24, 26-24,27-25) behind excellent play at the net.

“We knew what we were up against,” Manistique coach Amy Nixon said. “That was a battle. Winning it in three just made it that much better.”

Each game was tied up at 24-all and the Emeralds (15-4-1) found a way to win each one.

“We’re just prepared to finish,” Nixon said. “We’ve played in a lot of close games this year so it prepares us for moments like this. The girls don’t crack under pressure.”

After losing a tight first game, the Eskymos (7-3) battled back from a 21-14 deficit in the second game to tie the score at 24. Manistique scored the last two points to win that one and take a 2-0 lead.

In the third game, Escanaba led throughout and held a 21-16 lead before watching that lead slip through the cracks as well.

“That was good volleyball on both sides,” Eskymos’ coach Adam Lambert said.

“It was a lot of fun, but it was tough. We beat them at their place in five sets earlier this year but they had a few players out then and tonight they were at full strength.”

Lexi Chaillier led the way for the Eskymos, recording 10 kills and eight blocks. Kathryn Wilson chipped in with six kills and six digs, and Nicole Kamin made her varsity debut by recording eight kills and three blocks.

“This was her first game on varsity,” Lambert said. “Eight kills is a good way to start.”

Escanaba will host the Escanaba Elks Invitational Saturday.
