Emeralds claim volleyball title

MARQUETTE — A pair of lengthy service runs made a difference for the Manistique Emeralds as they beat the Marquette Redettes (25-14, 23-25, 15-1) for the title in Saturday’s Northern Michigan University Invitational.

Madison Zellar opened the last set with eight straight service points and Emilee McDaniel’s seven-point run decided the issue.

“It was a fun day,” said Emeralds’ coach Amy Nixon. “We served real well and I think our defense was real strong. The girls did a good job covering the floor and carrying out their responsibilities. I think our hitters did a fantastic job at the net.”

The Emeralds topped Stephenson (25-17, 25-23) in the semifinals and Marquette reached the finals with a 2-0 victory over Munising.

“Stephenson is very scrappy,” said Nixon. “They do a lot to keep the ball alive. Marquette is a very tall team. I don’t think they have any front row players under 5-10. They were excited to play us. They liked the challenge.”

The Emeralds split with Gwinn (22-25, 25-17), topped Bark River-Harris (25-21, 25-9) and split with Marquette (22-25, 25-23) in pool play, then beat Ishpeming (25-11, 25-11) in bracket play.

Manistique’s Jeanni Chartier hit 10 service aces. Zellar and Lenna Smith had nine each.

McDaniel recorded 41 kills and eight blocks and Kayla Muth tallied 36 kills and 10 blocks.

Joslyn Muth collected 98 assists. Smith had 41 digs and Sydny Peterson finished with 40.

Superior Central fell to Ishpeming (25-15, 25-20) and Munising (25-15, 25-23) and split with Bessemer (25-22, 18-25) in pool play, then fell to Brimley 2-0 in bracket.
