C-N stays perfect in VB

NORWAY — Carney-Nadeau brought out the worst in Norway Tuesday.
The unbeaten Wolves clipped the Knights 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-12) to clinch the small-school division volleyball title in the Skyline Central Conference.
“Good old-fashioned butt-whupping, that’s what that was,” said Norway Coach Steve Andrews. “First off, all the credit to Carney. That’s a good team. They make you look bad when they play that well.”
Norway kills from Haley Clifford and Allie Sheski along with a Katie Leiker ace knotted the first set at 17. The Wolves then ran off five and three-point streaks to take the set.
“We had a little slow start, then we picked it up,” said Carney Coach Steve Kedsch, his Wolves getting an Alanis Harris’ ace down the stretch. “We were serving well and that kept Norway off balance. They couldn’t set up their big hitters and it seems to me they got a little frustrated.
“Our girls were playing solid defense and good volleyball.”
Norway didn’t challenge in the next two sets.
“They serve well, they attack well, they don’t make a lot of errors,” Andrews said of the Wolves. “We were off. Balls were dropping that normally don’t.
“We came out strong in the first but we’re just not as mentally tough as they are.”
Sophomores Taylor Kedsch and Liana Blahnik led the Wolves with eight and seven kills, respectively. Layla Blahnik-Thoune added five; Sandra Boulton, four; and Ashlyn Hansen, three.
Talisha McCullough tallied 13 assists and Blahnik-Thoune had eight. Harris also contributed 15 digs and three aces.
“We kind of thought this was going to be a rebuilding year,’ said Kedsch, whose Wolves graduated three all-league players from last year’s SC champion. “We lost a lot of our offense. like 80 percent.
“We brought up two sophomores in Taylor Kedsch and Liana Blahnik and these girls are carrying the load offensively. The rest of the kids all stepped up a little bit.”
Norway (6-2 conference) dropped to second in the large-school division behind once-beaten Munising. The Knights host North Central Thursday for Parents Night and visit Munising next week.
“It’s one of those nights you want to forget, especially when you know the girls can play at another level,” Andrews said. “Carney didn’t have many hitting errors in the three games. They can fit on one hand and we’re putting them out all over the place.”
The Wolves (9-0) host Bark River-Harris Thursday.
“We’re excited to be where we’re at at this point in the season,” Kedsch said.
