Tech skaters split

MADISON, Wis. — Michigan Tech’s hockey team picked up its first win of the season here Friday, defeating No. 14 Wisconsin 6-2.

The Huskies took advantage of the power play by scoring five goals. Five different players scored and goaltender Matt Juruisk stopped 25 shots against his former team to get the win.

Saturday was a different story, as the Huskies fell 6-2. Tech led 2-1 before surrendering five straight goals.

Mayon sets record

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University dropped its home finale here on senior day, losing to Michigan Tech 35-33. The game was close throughtout, and the Wildcats had an opportunity to tie the score late.

The Wildcats got the ball trailing 35-27 with just over four minutes remaining. After driving the ball down the field, Isiah Wright carried multiple Huskies’ defenders into the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to two with 49 seconds remaining. However, the two-point conversion attempt failed and the Huskies were able to secure the win.

This is the ninth straight Miner’s Cup victory for the Huskies.

A big story of the game was senior Jake Mayon, who broke NMU’s all-time rushing record. Mayon entered needing 91 yards to break the record and broke it on a 30-yard gain on the Wildcats second possession after rushing for 66 yards and a touchdown on their first drive.

Mayon ran for 195 yards and caught three balls for 17 yards and a touchdown. Mayon has gained 1,232 yards this season and is 237 yards shy of the single-season rushing record. He has a record 3,947 yards rushing for his career to break the mark that was held by Steve Avery.

The Wildcats will play at Wayne State Saturday, while the Huskies are on a bye before facing Northwood in their season finale Nov. 10 at Sherman Field.

NMU icers split

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan’s hockey team split two games with Bemidji State.

The Wildcats won 3-0 Friday in their home opener. Senior goaltender Atte Tolvanen had 20 saves for the Wildcats first shutout in nearly a year. He has the third-most saves in the NCAA this season with 142, and his save percentage is .904.

NMU wasn’t able to sustain its success Saturday, falling 2-1 against the Beavers. Darien Craighead scored the lone goal for the Wildcats on a power play with 27 seconds remaining in the first period.

The Wildcats travel to face Bowling Green State University Friday.
