Mid Pen, Rockets win XC race titles

MANISTIQUE — The Mid Peninsula girls placed five runners among the top nine Wednesday, earning top honors in the Manistique Invitational cross country meet with 28 points. Munising was runner-up.

Munising’s Madeleine Peramaki won for the third straight time, covering the 3.1-mile course in 21 minutes, 26 seconds. She was followed by Mid Pen’s Daisy Englund (22:03) and Landry Koski (22:09) and Superior Central’s Danika Walters.

“Landry and Daisy are doing real well,” said Mid Pen coach Mark Branstrom. “Maddy is running real well. too. It almost looks like she’s shot out of a cannon.”

Mid Pen’s Cheveney Koski placed sixth (24:58), with Kennedy Englund eighth (25:49) and Shea Lampinen ninth (26:48).

The Rapid River boys were crowned champions and Mid Pen was runner-up.

Manistique’s Alex Misniakiewicz won the boys’ race at 19:24. MId Pen was led by Zach Englund in ninth (23:07) and Nick Temple 12th (25:31).

“I’m very pleased with how the kids run,” said Branstrom. “The weather was perfect. It was a great day for a race.”

Mid Pen sixth-grader Tia Nummilien placed fourth in the junior high race.
