Emeralds volleyball beats Gwinn in four sets

MANISTIQUE — The Manistique Emeralds passed a major early-season test Tuesday night, earning a 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 22-25, 25-20) volleyball triumph over the Gwinn Modeltowners.

“I think our offense did a real good job,” said Emeralds’ coach Amy Nixon.

“All our hitters contributed. They were attacking the net well and I think we served pretty consistently.

We were able to hold our serve, which enabled our hitters to do their job.”

The Modeltowners were fresh from a runner-up finish in Saturday’s Gladstone “Rock” Invitational.

Emilee McDaniel led the Emeralds with 15 kills and four blocks. Abby Burnham added 10 kills. Joslyn Muth distributed 28 assists and Lenna Smith had 25 digs in this Mid-Peninsula Conference match-up.

“Emilee did a great job and I thought Abby played the ball pretty smart tonight,” said Nixon.

Manistique, which also won the jayvee match (25-19, 25-14), hosts Escanaba Thursday.

The summary:

Manistique — McDaniel (two aces, 15 kills, four blocks); Smith (two aces, 25 digs); Burnham (10 kills); K. Muth (four blocks); J. Muth (28 assists); Peterson (11 digs).
