Emeralds cancel

game at Negaunee

MANISTIQUE — Because the Manistique Emeralds do not have enough healthy varsity players, they will forfeit Friday’s football game at Negaunee. It is the second forfeit in the past three weeks for the Emeralds, who finished last week’s 41-0 loss to West Iron County with just 10 healthy players.

SCANABA — Six Upper Peninsula football teams have received top 10 recognition in the first Associated Press state football poll of the season.

Pickford and Stephenson are ranked one-two in the eight-player division, with Rapid River and Engadine getting honorable mention.

In Division 6, Calumet is tied for ninth and in D-8, in D-7 Ishpeming is sixth and West Iron County is ninth. St. Ignace is tied for 10th in D-8.

Escanaba received honorable mention in D-4.

ESCANABA — Lucius Padaoan, No. 64, of Escanaba helped provide coverage on the late sack by Joe Jacobson of Detroit Loyola quarterback Marcus Lee in the photo in Monday’s Daily Press. It was indicated Robert Charles, No. 54, assisted.
