Braves’ harriers win Newberry title

NEWBERRY — The Gladstone boys grabbed the top three places for the second straight time Saturday, winning the Newberry Invitational cross country meet with 44 points.

They were followed by the host Indians, Sault Ste. Marie jayvees and Rudyard.

Senior Adam Bruce covered the hilly 3.1-mile race in 16 minutes, 35 seconds, shattering the course record by 54 seconds. He was followed by freshman Giovanni Mathews (18:18) and senior Jake Strasler (18:23) for the same order of finish as in Wednesday’s North Central Invitational.

“It was good to see the boys go 1-2-3 again,” said Braves’ coach Gary Whitmer. “It’s a tough course, a lot of up and down. I thought the course was tougher than North Central.

The Gladstone girls placed third this time with 64 points, led by freshman Jamisyn Bergeron at 23:46. Chloe Charlebois took eighth (24:12) and Lilly Karl was 15th (24:25).

“Most of the girls ran 30 seconds faster this time,” said Whitmer. “I thought they recovered quickly, which is encouraging. I’m real pleased with their effort. Sam Strasler cut 40 seconds off her time from North Central.”

St. Ignace’s Elizabeth Becker won the girls’ race at 21:51.

The Braves resume in Tuesday’s Kingsford Invitational at the Iron Mountain City Park.
