Kleimans retain home streak

Adam Niemi/Iron Mountain Daily News) Cody Kleiman (48) holds off Cam Winner during the Lucas Oil Midwest Short Course League Pro Lite off-road race at Bark River International Raceway on Saturday, in Bark River.

BARK RIVER – The Kleiman streak remains intact at Bark River International Raceway.

Cody and Kyle Kleiman haven’t conceded a race at their home track in the last four years after sweeping the Pro Lite races Saturday and Sunday in Lucas Oil Midwest Short Course League off-road racing.

Cody won first place Saturday while Kyle was taken out on a wreck.

He bounced back Sunday with his own first-place finish.

“I started second row with two slower guys up front and got around them right away put it on cruise control from there,” Cody said Saturday. “It was a great race. The track was rough and gnarly but it was a blast.”

In the Pro 2 race Saturday, Felch native Chad Hord was in position to go for the win.

Patient and biding his time in second place, Hord was waiting for the right opportunity to pounce on the lead.

Then, his steering wheel vibrated ominously.

The power steering pump blew and Hord fell back to a last-place finish.

“It’s really heart-wrenching because we had a fast truck. We went out qualifying this morning and we qualified first,” Hord said. “We didn’t qualify first by a little, it was over a second a lap.

“To start the race, I started in fourth, I was kind of conservative, biding my time. I didn’t want to take myself out,” Hord added.

“I got into second within a couple laps and started going after the leader and power steering pump went out. It’s hard to drive these things period, let alone at the level it takes to win when that goes out.

“It happens, that’s racing and just come back and go through it. Just knowing we had as dominant of a truck as we had, that’s hard to take.”

Hord finished ninth on Sunday.

Gabe Johnson, Hord’s cousin, took second place on Saturday and first on Sunday.

After Saturday’s race, Johnson felt confident about his second-place finish and called his shot for Sunday.

“I didn’t have a very good start,” he said. “I just had to find my way through the pack and just keep it going. In the end, I just kept going and got where I needed to be. I didn’t get the top spot, but I’ll be there tomorrow.”

Johnson said he was hit in the head by a sizable rock during Saturday’s race, but felt OK in the evening. The rocks were also a worry for Cody, who said he spotted six-inch rocks with sharp edges around the track.

“There’s rocks that are six inches tall that are sharp and that can cut a tire,” he said. “If you cut a tire you’re done for the race.”

Cody was also confident after Saturday’s race about either he or Kyle winning the Pro Lite main on Sunday.

“It was just a blast to do it in front of the home crowd again,” Cody said. “Over the last three years Kyle and I have been undefeated at this track and we’re just trying to keep that going tomorrow.”

Johnson, 18, said Bark River is his favorite because it suits his finesse racing style.

“This track is probably my favorite track. I’m more of a finesse driver,” Johnson said.

“I don’t want to just go full out. This track takes a lot of finesse to drive it. I feel like I do well here. It suits my style naturally and I feel like it’s more of a driver’s game and that’s what this track is.”

Before he started racing UTV’s three years ago, Johnson helped in Hord’s garage with sweeping and other chores when he was about 10. But being on the track was always his goal.

“I’ve always been around it since I was little,” Johnson said. “I always had a dream – I wanted to be that guy out there racing. It came true.”
