St. Clair girls win Junior state title

Mike Mattson | Daily Press Kylie Russell, left, and Lainey Pavlov (12) celebrate after the final out Monday in St. Clair’s 10-3 win against Charlevoix in the Girls Little League Major (13-14) state championship game at Gladstone High School.

GLADSTONE — They came. They saw. They conquered.

The St. Clair Junior Girls’ Little League All-Stars (age 13-14), showing plenty of speed on the bases, captured the state softball title Monday afternoon in a 10-3 victory over Charlevoix.

St. Clair unleashed an 18-hit attack, seven of which were infield or bunt singles.

Kylie Russell, among the fastest baserunners in the tournament, reached base in her first three at-bats by beating throws to first on two infield hits and a bunt.

“The girls just worked so hard for this,” said St. Clair manager Danny Borg. “During the season we did a lot of practice with bunting because we realize it’s such a large part of softball from Little League all the way through college. We worked on executing the bunt and putting girls in scoring position and when we did swing away, we were disciplined enough to find the gaps.”

The victory sends St. Clair to the Central Regional in South Holland, Ill.

St. Clair’s Olivia Gadenau snapped a 2-2 tie on a double to leftfield in the third inning and Skye Gottler followed with an RBI double to left for a 5-2 lead.

The state champions added two runs each in the fourth and sixth and concluded the scoring on Lainey Pavlov’s single to right in the seventh.

St. Clair began the scoring on Claire Borg’s two-run single to left in the first. Charlevoix tied the scoring by cashing in on three errors in its half of the inning.

“We knew we were short-staffed because we had only nine girls,” said Charlevoix manager Jim Lentz. “Although, that’s not to take anything away from St. Clair. They’re an excellent team. We’re very proud of the effort our girls put out. They played their hearts out.”

Pavlov led a balanced attack with four hits. Savanna Clark, Gottler and Russell finished with three each. Julia Schweihofer and Claire Borg added two apiece.

“We came a long way this year,” said manager Borg. “We tried to win it one inning at a time and the girls stayed true to the game plan. We didn’t take anyone lightly. This was our first time playing up here and we truly enjoyed it. This is a great place and a great community. They ran a great tournament and the umpiring crew was fantastic.”

Claire Borg took the complete game victory, scattering five hits, striking out four and walking none.

Grace Lentz had two hits for Charlevoix, which eliminated Kingsford 10-3 in a semifinal game.

Sandison worked four frames and took the loss. She fanned six, walked one and gave up seven runs on 13 hits.

St. Clair beat Georgetown 13-3 in five innings in the other semifinal.

Claire Borg, Clark and Pavlov had two hits each for St. Clair, which broke a 3-3 tie by scoring five times in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Georgetown’s Lydia Warsen also had two hits.

In Monday’s quarterfinals, Kaylee Vanderveen tossed a two-hitter, fanned seven and walked one as Georgetown blanked Onaway 11-0.

Vanderveen ripped two triples and Elsie Norton clubbed a two-run homer.

Lily Woodgate had three hits and Katherine Wagner and Kate Klinger added two each in Charlevoix’s 15-8 conquest of Tri-City North in six innings.
