Esky is Major Little League champs

NORWAY — Escanaba turned back Kingsford 8-5 to capture the Little League District 10 major (age 12-under) softball championship Monday at Marion Park.

Escanaba, after beating three district foes by a combined 30-6 margin, advances to the sectional tournament Saturday at Ironwood. District Administrator Don Howes said Marquette or Houghton will meet Escanaba at noon and 2 p.m. (Central time). A third game will be played Sunday if necessary.

Kingsford, which suffered an 11-0 loss to Escanaba on Thursday, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when pitcher Maddy Kreider came across to score.

Escanaba answered in the bottom of the first with Carley McInerney scoring.

Kreider also scored in the third inning when Kingsford snapped the 1-1 deadlock.

Escanaba followed with three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and three in the fifth for an 8-2 lead. Natalie Beauchamp, Isabelle Braun and pitcher Aubrey Stropich tallied the third-inning runs.

McInerney scored her second run in the fourth. Escanaba’s Anna Boutilier, Katie Lamb and Sophie Lehto scored in the fifth.

Kingsford threatened in the sixth, scoring three runs and stranding two runners when Stropich recorded her 10th strikeout to end the game. Addy Weber, Finley Lutz and Kailey Sundquist scored for Kingsford in the sixth.
