Esky takes two from Kingsford

Prep baseball

ESCANABA — It may have become little bit of an adventure at times Tuesday, but the Escanaba Eskymos hung on for 9-7 and 3-2 baseball victories over the Kingsford Flivvers at Al Ness Field.

The Eskymos led 9-3 after five innings in the opener before Kingsford scored two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh.

Josh Bruntjens and Craig Kamin led the Eskymos with two hits each. Courage Krueger and Jake Anderson drove in two runs apiece for Esky, which scored five times in the second.

Winning pitcher Grant LaMarche worked 5 2/3 innings, striking out four, walking four and allowing five runs on seven hits. Noah Lancour pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and recorded the save.

“I thought Grant had a good outing and Noah pitched awesome in a pressure situation,” said Esky head coach Scott Hanson. “In general, I thought we controlled the game”

Krueger pitched all six innings in the second game, striking out five, walking two and giving up two runs on five hits.

Esky, fueled by Aaron Young’s RBI single, did all its scoring in the opening frame of the nightcap.

Kingsford scored both of its runs in the fourth and had a chance to tie the score. Bruntjen, however, hauled in a flyball in centerfield and fired the ball to the plate for a double play.

The Eskymos (12-4) visit Menominee Thursday at 7 p.m.
