KINGSFORD — Iron Mountain’s Aaron Bolo remained unbeaten and earned the outstanding wrestler award at the Ray Mariucci Invitational on Saturday.

Bolo pinned Munising’s Colin Murdock in the second period to win the 189-pound title. This was the first match this year between Bolo and Murdock.

“We knew Murdock was an aggressive wrestler and comes out physical right away,” said Mountaineers coach Brandon Rutter. “Bolo was ready for him.”

Iron Mountain teammate Dylan Hoffart won his fourth career “Ray Mariucci” title, edging Nick Miles of Munising 4-2 for 125-pound honors. Hoffart’s previous titles came at 119 and 112 (twice).

“Dylan wrestled a great match,” Rutter said.

Gladstone won a fifth straight “Ray Mariucci” championship, posting 221 points to dominate the 11-team tournament. Westwood and Marquette shared second at 114, followed by Iron Mountain in fourth with 96. The Storm and Flivvers shared sixth with 57 points.

The Braves wrestled in eight finals and emerged with seven titles from Chandler Liebold (112), Cole Hansen (130). Adam Bruce (135), Brody Sanville (140), Alex Chouinard (152), Austin Demeuse (171) and Jared Demeuse (215).

Marquette’s Beau Caster, recipient of the two previous “Mariucci” outstanding wrestler awards, pinned Westwood’s Alaric Martin for the 160-pound championship.

The Florence-Niagara co-op known as the Northwoods Storm registered two individual champions in Tristen Mascarette (119) and freshman Shamus McLain (145).

Mascarette edged previously unbeaten Vadym Torvinen of Gladstone 7-6 in the finals.

“Tristen wrestled very well and seems to be back in his groove,” Storm coach Shane McLain said.

Shamus McLain decisioned Kingsford’s Trevor Povolo 6-0 for top honors. Povolo is ranked seventh among Division 3 wrestlers in his weight class.

Kingsford also had Jonathan Schmutzler (152) and Nick Ouradnik (285) taking runner-up in their weight classes.

Schmutzler nearly gained escape points in a 2-1 finals loss to Gladstone’s Alex Chouinard.

UP Championship is scheduled for Saturday at Marquette.
